Internet Search Engines

  • All in One Search Page - This mega-search facility permits searching lots of other web search engines from one central location with a consistent interface. It may look a little intimidating at first, but give it a try - you'll save lots of time surfing for the information you need.

  • Box Office Guru - An unbelievably comprehensive and constantly updated collection of film box office stats, including opening/total grosses for over 1600 pix released since 1989; current and past opening weekends; monthly averages; a release schedule for the coming four months, and some very pithy commentary by Gitesh Pandya, whose site this is. Gitesh deserves a medal.

  • Alta Vista - Offering compact or detailed searches through 16 million Web pages. It also provides a full-text index of more than 13,000 newsgroups.

  • Arfie (Dogpile Search Engine) - This mega-search facility simultaneously looks at about two dozen top Internet search engines, adjusting boolean and proximity operators to each one. And it's really fast!

  • Debriefing Meta Search Engine - This super-search engine forwards your search request to the AltaVista, Yahoo, Infoseek, Excite, Webcrawler, Lycos and Hotbot search engines. It then collates the results, ranks them, removes duplicates, and then gives you what it thinks is the most significant domain name for your search. (Note: Java must be enabled in your browser for Debriefing to work.)

  • DejaNews - Search the Usenet news archive with DejaNews to find articles by date, author, subject, and newsgroup.

  • Excite - Excite tracks down information by searching for concepts, not just keywords.

  • HotBot - This super-search engine from the folks at Wired magazine claims to index more than 55 million web pages. You can also search Usenet News and top news sites.

  • InfoSeek Net Search - Type in words and phrases to Search the Net.

  • The Internet Sleuth - Meta-search facility.

  • Lycos - Comprehensive catalog of the Internet.

  • Magellan - Provides reviews and ratings for a vast collection of Web, FTP, and Gopher sites, and Usenet newsgroups.

  • Netsearcher's Ultimate Cheat Sheet - From PC Magazine, here are the tips, tools, tricks, and know-how you need to search the Web, Usenet, White Pages services, and MetaSearch sites.

  • Northern Light Search Engine - A speedy new search engine that automatically organizes the results of your search into customized folders.  For example, a search on "lasers" created folders named Optics, Laser Safety, Semiconductors, Ophthalmology, Lenses, Military Sites, etc.

  • WebCrawler Searching - Internet search tool.

  • Yahoo Search - The granddaddy of Internet directories.

  • Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco - With over 65,000 works of art, this is currently the largest searchable art image database in the world.

  • International Lyrics Server This lyrics database comes with a simple but flexible search feature.

  • Kyrie's Architecture Page - An enormous collection of links to websites about current and past architects and architecture from around the world.

  • MOMA - On-line site of the famous New York Museum of Modern Art.

  • Associations Directory - This service takes you directly to many of the associations currently operating on the World-Wide Web.

  • BigBook - An impressive Yellow Pages directory that lets you search by category, complete with location maps.

  • Bigfoot - Huge directory of e-mail addresses and white pages.

  • Four 11- A comprehensive directory of e-mail and white page listings, along with a few nice bonus features like government and celebrity listings.

  • InfoSpace - Directory including Internet Yellow and White pages, local city information, and complete Federal, State, County and City government listings for the United States.

  • International Telephone Directory - white and yellow pages and fax directory for countries around the world. A wide collection for the U.S., though most other nations just have fax listings.

  • Coming Soon... - Want to know if somebody else has already hatched that great film idea you're thinking of speccing? Point your browser at this web page. It's got brief synopses of near-future releases as well as films in development through the year 2003, courtesy of philm phreak Matt Williams.

  • The Complete Motion Picture Database -- a detailed collection based on the famous 23-volume Motion Picture Guide filmography and the Film Encyclopedia biography collection.

  • Cyberspace Film School - Official website of the Hollywood Film Institute. Mostly for budding talent, the site includes some useful info on how to produce a film, find an agent, contact a star, direct your first feature or sell your script.

  • Done Deal - A constantly-updated list of recent film script deals, including title, log line, studio, agent, price, and other info. A truly great resource. Be sure to check out the New Archives section.

  • Early Motion Pictures (1897-1916) - Five early motion picture collections from the U.S. Library of Congress.

  • Entertainment News Daily - The latest goings-on in film, TV and music.

  • Film Festivals Server - Comprehensive worldwide festival coverage.

  • Ultimate TV - Everything you want to know about TV from listings to jobs.

  • The British Monarchy - This official website of the Monarchy in Britain includes historical and present-day information about The Royals and their palaces, as well as photographs from The Royal Collection of art.

  • The CIA - Lots of facts; no secrets, but a good suggested reading list.

  • CIA 1997 World Factbook - The newest version of the CIA's very useful global guide. Contains facts on every country in the world, including information on each country's geography, population, government, transportation, defense systems and more.

  • Congressional Email Directory - If an elected official in any of the fifty states or U.S. territories has an email address, you can find it in this searchable database. Allows search by both name and state/territory.

  • DefenseLINK - The World-Wide Web Information Service from the Department of Defense with links to the Office of the Secretary, Joint Chiefs of Staff, Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Reserve, National Guard and more.

  • The Embassy Page - Links to U.S. and other nations' Embassies and Consulates around the world.

  • FedStats - On-line access to the full range of public statistics and information produced by over 70 US Federal Government agencies. Stats from crimes to crops are downloadable in ready-made spreadsheet form.

  • Government Information Locator Service (GILS) - GILS records identify public information resources within the Federal Government, describe the information available in those resources, and assist in obtaining the information.

  • National First Ladies Library - On-line version of the national archive devoted to U.S. First Ladies and other important women in history.

  • Roberto Ortiz de Zarate's Political Datasets - A host of facts on world leaders from over 180 countries dating back to 1945. Includes current leaders, women world leaders, and rulers dead in violent circumstances.

  • The Patent Office (UK) - This offical website of the United Kingdom's Patent Office can be browsed by category or searched with keywords. Includes a feature story on widgets. Yes, they do exist, and you'll never guess what they are.

  • Rulers - Lists of heads of state and heads of government (and, in certain cases, de facto leaders which don't occupy either of those formal positions) of all currently existing countries and territories.

  • U.S. House Of Representatives - Home Page - Provides public access to legislative information as well as information about Members, Committees, and Organizations of the House and to other U.S. government information resources.

  • Douglass Archives of American Public Address - An electronic archive of American oratory and related documents.

  • Early America Archives - Original newspapers, maps and writings from 18th Century America-- the Colonial Period, the War of Independence, and the presidencies of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.

  • The Historical Text Archive - Created for historians for the study and teaching of history. It contains links to many sites in the world.

  • History Buffs Home Page - A site devoted to newspaper press coverage of events in American history, it includes every Presidential Inaugural Address, as well as searchable categories like the Civil War, Crime Figures, and the Old West.

  • Historynet - Comprehensive resource for information on national and international history, including eyewitness accounts, personality profiles, great battles.

  • HyperHistory Online - Cyber-companion to Nothinger's World History Chart. It presents 3000 years of world history with a combination of colorful graphics, lifelines, timelines, maps, and descriptive text files. A great way to catch up on what's been happening in the world for the last few millenia.

  • Inaugural Addresses - Inaugural addresses for all the presidents from Washington to Clinton.

  • National Archives and Records Administration - Documents--diaries, letters, drawings, and memoirs--created by those who participated in or witnessed the events of the past.

  • National First Ladies Library - On-line version of the national archive devoted to U.S. First Ladies and other important women in history.

  • Russian History - From students in the Russian Studies Program at Bucknell University, this site contains links to other sites dealing with Russia's history, its dynasties, genealogies of Russian nobility, and other interesting historical aspects of our ex-Cold War enemy.

  • Airliners.net - Features photos of commercial and military airliners and helicopters, including cockpit views. The site also contains airport overviews and photos of aviation accidents, if you're into that kind of thing.

  • Alta Vista Translation Page - We have no idea how it works, but this site provides a rudimentary translation of any web page from French, Spanish, Italian, German or Portuguese into English (and vice versa). You can also input plain text phrases. Very cool.

  • American Sign Language Dictionary - This cool site uses animated photos to teach basic American Sign Language (ASL). Although kind of slow, it's an excellent use of the Web, and includes resource links of interest to the deaf community.

  • Ariga - A glossary of Yiddish expressions. An indexed-by-first-letter listing of familiar and not-so-familiar Yiddish words and expressions with their English translations.

  • Ask An Expert - A directory of links to people who have volunteered their time to answer questions and webpages that provide information.

  • Ask Jeeves - Ask Jeeves allows you to ask a question in plain English and, after interacting with you to confirm the question, takes you to one and only one web site that answers your question.

  • Babel - A list of spelled-out computer-related acronyms (without definitions, however).

  • Bartlett's Familiar Quotations - Searchable database.

  • Bible Gateway - Search through six different English translations of the most widely read book in history. Besides English, you can search in French, German, Swedish, Spanish, Latin, and... Tagalog!

  • Cockney Handbook - A dictionary of London slang wot's sweet as a nut, suss? (= that's absolutely perfect, understand?)

  • Common Errors in English - A great place to check those tricky little spelling and grammatical quirks of our language. Are you sure you know the difference between "imply" and infer"?

PLANTS provides standardized plant names, symbols and other plant attribute information. What does PLANTS stand for? Plant List of Attributes, Nomenclature, Taxonomy, and Symbols. Hey, it's a government acronym, after all.
