What is GAMMA?
Gamma is a numerical value that indicates the relationship between the input and the output signals of a camera/monitor, as illustrated in the graph below. Generally, the straighter the gamma curve becomes (y=1), the more natural the image appears to the human eye. Because monitors have a gamma curve with a value of 2.2, the camera is usually set up with a reverse 0.45 gamma so the resultant curve is close to a straight line. The lower area of the curve affects dark colors while the higher area determines the colors close to white. The middle area represents colors in-between. The GAMMA function mainly corrects the color of middle areas of the curve.

Gamma graph

Sony video cameras offer a variety of convinient gamma functions. These are STEP GAMMA for defining the area of the curve that needs to be corrected, MASTER GAMMA which corrects the entire curve, and GAMMA tables (STD and FILM) which offer a set of present gamma values. For example, you can deepen colors by setting MASTER GAMMA to a + value, then correct specific colors areas using STEP GAMMA, and finally select FILM from the GAMMA tables, creating images with rich colors and unique depth. However, because colors can be over-emphasized depending on the setting, it is necessary to check the image on your video monitor as you use these functions.

  • What is LEVEL DEPEND
The LEVEL DEPEND function reduces the coarseness of black or dark areas of an image by preventing the noice in such areas from being emphasized by the DETAIL process.

While the CRISPENING function prevents the entire image from being coarsened, the LEVEL DEPEND function prevents this for signals only below a certain video level.

Adjusting LEVEL DEPEND LVL allows you to select the video level threshold for which detail signails should not be added to the image. Setting LEVEL DEPEND LVL to a positive (+) value widens the range in which the coarseness of dark image areas is reduced. However, it must be noted that selecting a value too high can also cause picture edges of the entire image to blur. For this reason, LEVEL DEPEND LVL should be adjusting with care using a video monitor.

    LEVEL DEPEND GRAPH

In summary, LEVEL DEPEND is an effective funtion when noise in dark image areas is emphasized by the DETAIL process, when noice increase due to camera gain-up, and so on.

    What is KNEE APERTURE?
When the KNEE function is set to ON, the bright areas of the image are compressed so that the signal level falls within the video signal's dynamic range (Fig. 1). In this process, the luminance of the image is compressed, which can cause the contrast of the image to drop, and accordingly the solid appearance of the image to decrease.

In such situations, KNEE APERTURE reproduces the sharpness and solid appearance of the image, enhancing only the signals compressed by the KNEE function (Fig. 2). Although this function may seem similar to the DETAIL function, the two differ in that DETAIL emphasizes the entire luminance range of the signal, while KNEE APERTURE emphasizes signals only in the highlight areas that were compressed by the KNEE function.

    KNEE APERTURE Graph

    What is BLACK GAMMA?
BLACK GAMMA is a function that allows the gamma curve near black signal levels to be either lowered or boosted with respect to the input level, to achieve the desired picture reproduction in dark areas of the image.

Using this function, dark areas of the picture can either be preproduced with deeper darkness and more color saturation, or with higher contrast but less colro depth.

In Sony cameras, setting the BLACK GAMMA RANGE to either LOW, L.MID, H.MID, or HIGH determines the signal level range to be adjusted, and adjusting the MASTER BLACK GAMMA value (-99 to +99) determines the shape of the gamma curve to be applied to that signal range.

As in the example, adjusting MASTER GAMMA applies the same gamma curve to all R/G/B channels. However, Sony cameras also allow BLACK GAMMA to be adjusted individually for each R/G/B channel (R GAMMA/G GAMMA/B GAMMA).

    What is CRISPENING
CRISPENING is a function that prevents detail signals being generated around noise or small picture edge transitions, when the DETAIL function is set to ON. The CRISPENING fucntion allows you to select the threshold (based on transition level) of picture edge transitions to which detail signals should not be added.

In Sony cameras, the crispening level can be adjusted in the range of -99 to +99. The same setting vakue may have a different effect on the image, depending on the camera and recording formats used, such as HDCAM, DVCAM, and so on.

It is also important to note taht raising crispening level can result in details signals not be added around small picture edge transitions. Since this can cause image to blur, crispening should be adjusted with care, using a high grade picture monitor.

    CRISPENING Graph
    What is KNEE SATURATION
When a camera's KNEE function is set to ON, the bright areas of the image are compressed in the KNEE circuit. In this proces, both the luminance (Y) signals and color-difference (R-Y, B-Y) signals are compressed together, which can sometimes cause the color saturation of the image to drop.

KNEE SATURATION is a function that eliminates this saturation drop while maintaining the original function of the KNEE circuit. When KNEE SATURATION is set to ON, the color-difference (R-Y, B-Y) signals are sent to the KNEE SATURATION circuit which applies a knee function optimized for these color signals. These signals are then added back to the mainstream signals, obtaining the final output signal.

The levels of color vividness (KNEE SAT LEVEL) can be adjusted in the range of -99 to +99.

***KNEE: A function that allows contrast to be reproduced in the bright areas of objects within the video signal's dynamic range (the range of teh luminance that can be processed).

    KNEE SATURATION Graph
    What is DETAIL?
Detail is a function used to adjust the texture of an image (sharpeness or softness of the image) by adding an electrically generated spike-shaped (detail) signal to the dark-to-bright transition of the original signal.

    What is DETAIL LEVEL?
Detail level refers to the level of the detail signal, which can be adjusted in the range of -99 to +99 on the DETAIL 1 page of the PAINT menu.

Changing the value from the center value 0(default) to positive(+) values increases the DETAIL LEVEL at the horizontal(H) and vertical(V) edges of the video signal, thus sharpening the image.

Changing the value to negative(-) values decreases the DETAIL LEVEL at the horizontal(H) and vertical(V) edges of the video signal, thus softening the image.
